Thoughts on Type in Day-to-Day Life

The First Day of School

Again this morning I am amazed at how differently each of my children are created. Today is the 1st day of school, it is hard to believe that summer has come and gone again.  In the dark hours, just before dawn, I hear at the top of the stairs, little feet.  I know immediately who that is – my little guy.  He is up and ready for back to school.  As he comes down the stairs he wants to know right away.  Where are his clothes and what time will leave for school.  I tell him where his clothes are and that he has almost an hour before we need to go.  He does everything on his before school chore chart and is ready with 30 minutes to spare.

My big guy does not rise until he smells the cinnamon toast and hears my singing  “It is time to rise and shine, and give God the glory, glory....” :)  Once he comes down he gets everything done as well but not as excited or as quickly as his brother.

My little guy is so excited about back to school, I think he thought the sooner he was ready -- the sooner the day would start at school.  My big guy's comment on school this morning was – wish we could run time ahead to 3:00 pm.

As I listen to them talk, from a distance, once again I am reminded how uniquely different they are.

The List Day!

Well, as the day started bright an early,  my husband asked me,  "What is your plan for the day?"  As I began to rattle of the things that  I wanted to do today, I realized that I had not made a list yet.  So as soon as he left for work - I knew what I needed to do, I had to make a list for today.  I know that if I made a list then I would get alot more done than if I just tried to remember what I wanted to accomplish.  Some of you who are not list makers must think that I am crazy or have nothing better to do than make "The List", well just as you can not imagine the list, I can not imagine tackling the day without it.  As I write out my list of things to do today, I think of how unquiely we are each created and how the Lord made us each special in our own way, mine is the list for the day.  I am thankful that we are not all the same, how boring would that be.   Well, I am most excited to have this day at home today to accomplish my list.

A J/P approach to the day!

As we approach another day of summer it amazes me at what I hear from my boys.  My youngest, who has a preference for J,  comes into my room and says, "Mom, what is the plan for the day" -- as I start to talk - he prompts me.  With a J preference, he needs a very specific list, a plan, a schedule and he wants to stick to that plan.

He wanted to know what would be for breakfast and when?

Do we have errands to run?  If so, when and where would we go?

bullet

What will we have lunch and when will we eat?

bullet

What will we do this afternoon?

bullet

What is for dinner?

Then do we have plans for tonight?

With J tendencies myself, I can appreciate the list, but it still takes me by surprise when you hear it from the mouth of a 7 year old.

Then I hear my older son, who has a preference for P call from upstairs, "Hey mom can I have breakfast soon?  By the way, are we going anywhere today?  Okay, thanks mom."  Then he goes back to what he was doing.  With his preference to P, he wants to be flexible, take in the information and wait to make a decision.

It does not matter how much I study type, I still find myself sitting at my computer with a smile on my face at the great free examples that my kids are always ready to share with me.

Today we launch our new site.  I'm excited about the opportunity to help people better understand themselves and and the people around them.  Personality type has the potential to make a huge difference in how people interact.  I will add entries to this area on a regular basis to discuss tips, strategies, and funny stories about type.  Email me anytime to talk type!
